Battle of the barrel-aged beers!!!

Today's battle pits two formidable and unique barrel-aged beers.

Harviestoun Ola Dubh Special 16 Reserve vs. Hitachino Nest XH

The Harviestoun is aged in Highland Park 16 year old single malt scotch barrels and the Hitachino is aged in Sake casks. The Harviestoun is classified as an Old Ale (not sure exactly what that means), but it is vaguely Porter-like. The Hitachino is more or less Belgian in style, but it has some wheat beer bubble gummy flavors.

The Harviestoun has a very distinct Scotch flavor and is quite good. The Hitachino is also quite good and the sake flavor adds a nice kick to the beer. I think that I like the Hitachino a little better. It is very refreshing to have a beer from Japan actually be good.

Harviestoun Ola Dubh Special 16 Reserve: 4.2/5
Hitachino Nest XH: 4.4/5
